We had planned to do a bit more exploring in Nuremburg today before making our way to our next stop in Rothenburg. We set out on foot to do a Rick Steves self-guided walking tour. The tour touched on a bunch of major sites in Nuremburg...
The Frauentor (one of the four medieval entrances to Nuremburg's Old Town)
The Craftsman's Courtyard
St. Lawrence Church (we think this was our favorite church to date!)
The tower house (built in 1200, this was basically a "single-family castle")
Self-photo in front of the Holy Ghost Hospital (built in the 14th century over the river)
The aptly named "Beautiful Fountain" in the Hauptmarkt (Market Square)
The courtyard of the Imperial Castle, high on the hill above Nuremburg
By then, we had worked up an appetite for a quick bite to eat. Matt felt that he couldn't leave Nuremburg without trying their famous "Nurnberger sausages" from the Bratwursthausle. For just 2 euros, you can get their so-called "Little Mac," a sandwich with three delicious Nurnberger sausages on a fresh roll.
Looks disgusting, tasted awesome according to Matt!
Kim also indulged in her favorite German treat...
On our way back to the car, we also happened upon a "family-ar" site...
The "STRAUB" Super Markt! Perhaps Kim's parents have been keeping something from her?!
Around 2:00 we headed to Rothenburg in our Mercedes (haha). The trip was short but very beautiful. It was made a lot easier thanks to Kim's parents, who loaned up their GPS for the trip (thanks Mom and Dad!).
It also was our first experience on the Autobahn. Matt tried to make the most of it, despite our car's little engine...
163 kph (101 mph) and STILL GETTING PASSED!
Finally we arrived in beautiful Rothenburg. It was a bit late in the day for taking good pictures, so those will have to wait until tomorrow. We browsed around town for a place for dinner, and eventually ended up at an Italian restaurant (our default vegetarian option for Germany). The food was actually great! Kim even got to try a new beverage...a Weissen-Cola (half wheat beer, half cola). It sounds strange, but it was actually remarkably good!
After dinner we had planned to take the highly recommended "Night Watchman's tour." It is touted as the most entertaining nighttime activity in Rothenburg, a town that seems to go to bed pretty early! It was a bit touristy, but very funny and actually full of some pretty interesting Medieval history.
On our way back to the hotel, we couldn't resist a stop at the Eis Cafe D'Isep to share a sundae! It was delicious!
Now we are off to bed before another day of exploring Rothenburg tomorrow!
Gute Nacht!
Love,
Matt and Kim
very fun!! but who the heck is this rick character?? he seems awfully responsible for the success of the vacay thus far.
ReplyDeleteRick Steves: Probably seen him on PBS or hear about him on NPR. They are always offering his DVDs up during the pledge drives. He also writes guidebooks for most countries in Europe. His recommendations have been pretty good this trip!
