...basically indicating that the next stretch of road would be windy and the lanes would only be about 6 feet wide! Scary, especially when you're driving next to semi trucks!
Lo and behold, we eventually made it to Freiburg. We were basically just planning to use Freiburg as a stop over point for tomorrow's journey through the Black Forest, so we weren't necessarily planning any grand activities. It's a good thing, because about the most interesting picture we took during the day was this one:
That's Kim in a candy shop holding up a lollipop about the size of her face! We contemplated buying it just for fun, but it was 20 Euros and super heavy, so we had to decline. The majority of the day yesterday was spent walking around Freiburg and trying to just casually explore, which is something we really haven't done too much of on this trip! We of course stumbled into some obligatory cathedrals and such, but we were looking for a laid back day, and that's just what we got!
For dinner we were planning on buying some picnic supplies and heading up to this beautiful overlook point to watch the sunset (stop making gagging sounds, we can hear you!), but unfortunately we made this decision too close to the time that the sun was setting. So, we decided we would go check out the overlook point and watch the sunset and do the picnic afterward in the comfort of our hotel room. The overlook point sure was beautiful...
The tall spire of the town's cathedral.
Looking out to the south over the town.
More pictures of the town as the sun was setting.
On our way back down from the top, we happened upon this little playground. It had an awesome looking slide, which Kim declared she needed to try out...sometimes it's fun to be a kid again!
The slide was great fun, and gave us a chance to catch the last glimpses of the sunset...beautiful!
After we made our way back to the base of the hill, we grabbed picnic supplies from the supermarket. The only snafu was that we didn't have any utensils! Our hotel had a restaurant, but considering that we have been forced to pay for salad dressing when we've ordered a salad (separate from the cost of the salad itself...it's a ridiculous story, remind me to tell you about it...), we figured that we'd be hard pressed to "borrow" some silverware. So, we did the next best thing...asked for some plastic-ware from the local McDonald's of course! Anyway, with
Tomorrow we start our drive through the Black Forest and end up in Baden-Baden. We have some "grand plans" for our time in Baden-Baden, so stay tuned for the next post!!
Gute Nacht!
Love,
Matt and Kim
