Today, we finally got some much needed sleep and started off the day a little later with some souvenir shopping around the Marienplatz in Munich. On the way back from our shopping trip, we happened upon an amazing stop at St. Peter's Church.
St. Peter's Church is the oldest church in Munich, founded in 1158. Much of the original was destroyed in the second world war, but it has been beautifully restored (half with Augustiner brew house money and half with private donations). Pictures do not really do this place justice, but we did our best!
After the quick stop in the church, we headed to the train station for our "real" destination of the day, the Andechs Monastery. The monastery was built in 1452, and Rick Steves says, "these monks brew the best beer in Germany," so we had to find out for ourselves! After a 1 hour train ride from Munich we headed to the monastery on foot through the BEAUTIFUL countryside...
After 3.5 miles of walking (we thought this would be a more manageable walk) we arrived at this gorgeous church!
After exploring the monastery grounds and some more souvenir shopping, we finally sat down for a well-deserved beer!
After our beers, we decided it would be just lovely to walk back to the train station (our decision making was a bit "affected" at this point). Finally we made it back to Munich, just in time for dinner. After having experiencing Oktoberfest firsthand, we decided that (although a tourist trap) the Hofbrauhaus is about as authentic an Oktoberfest experience one can have. We decided for our last night in Munich, we had to make a visit to the famous Hofbrauhaus and live it up...
Round one...
Round two...
After a total of 4.5 Liters between the two of us for the day, we were ready to befriend our neighbors, who just happened to be from Spain! What a perfect opportunity to practice our Spanish! Here is a somewhat blurry but telling picture of the gang. We exchanged email addresses with the new-found friends and plan to meet in Nuremburg for drinks on Friday...we'll see if they remember!
We have an early train to Prague in the morning for the next leg of our trip! Better get some sleep!
Gute Nacht!
Looks like you are having a great time. It will be nice to hear all the stories first hand when I come for my visit. Love you both please be SAFE. This is your mother not Richard just using his google account info.
